Understanding WHMIS

WHMIS stands for the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System. It is Canada’s nationwide system for communicating information about hazardous products used in the workplace. WHMIS helps ensure workers know how to safely handle, store, and dispose of hazardous materials and more.

The system uses standardized labels, pictograms, Safety Data Sheets (SDS), and worker education to reduce injuries and long-term health risks. The key to safety is awareness and the ability to read WHMIS information and pictograms.

Is WHMIS Training Mandatory?

Yes. Under WHMIS, which is administered federally by Health Canada, employers are legally required to make sure workers receive education and training on hazardous products used in the workplace. This includes understanding labels, pictograms, and Safety Data Sheets (SDSs).
